Comparison of Second Life virtual practicum learning outcomes with on-site practicum learning outcomes for nursing infomatics students

VWBPE 2021 Presentation
Presented: March 18, 2021
Speaker: Over50Adventurer (SL)

Nursing Informatics educators from one university did a retrospective study on practicum learning outcomes comparing a Second-Life virtual practicum and an onsite practicum for nursing informatics specialists. The researchers utilized the Nursing Informatics Competency Assessment Tool (NICA-L3/L4), a self-assessment tool to look at graduate level end achievements. The sample included 11 virtual practicum students and 40 onsite practicum students.  Results showed improvement from pre to post for all students meaning both educational venues supported competency achievement.

  • Participants will be able to provide an overview of SL as an option for graduate student practicum.
  • Participants will be able to discuss interim study findings and implications for future practicums.
