The Superhero's Journey New Student Orientation and Guided Pathways Areas of Study Digital Storytelling Project is an ongoing, persistent virtual learning environment to inform and inspire new students and advance institutional understanding at Peninsula College. Students design, build, and institute components with the continual goal to build an innovative marketing space and college introduction adventure filled with information, helpful resources, encouragement, and inclusive experiences.

Second Life Avatar Basics and Onboarding by Zinnia Zauber:
Second Life is a free 3D virtual world owned by Linden Labs and uniquely created by its Residents. It is free to join. There you, as an avatar, can interact in a productive immersive environment with real people from all over the world. You can explore the educational environments, creative social networking, and discover the future of online existence through collaboration, economics, art, activism, and training. It is a place to express yourself with positive action.

Your Avatar and Second Life Account
If you are new to Second Life and need to make an account, we are using the Rockcliffe University's website to sign up and for avatar onboarding https://www.enroll.onl/
Remember, when you sign up for Second Life, your user name is your avatar name. Choose wisely. This is the name people will call you inworld. You can use your actual name or one relating to your professional branding.
Don't use numbers or symbols in your name. You can in your password.
I am big on name meaning. And, remember people are going to be calling you this avatar name. You can change your display name after you have entered Second Life. My avatar name is Zinnia Zauber. Zinnias are one of my favorite flowers and it has two nn in it like my name. Zin can mean go forth and Nia can mean bright. Zauber means magic in German as a nod to that part of my heritage that doesn't show up in my actual name. In Second Life (SL), people call me Renne as well.
You can sign up through https://www.enroll.onl/ This is a safe and educational community. When you sign up, you will pick a Starter Avatar to enter through the Second Life Viewer. The viewer is like a 3D browser and you will download it to run on your computer. https://secondlife.com/support/downloads/ You will be able to customize your avatar after you have learned the basics of moving, communicating, and viewing through this avatar orientation. Part of the learning process is shopping with friends and discovering the real economy in action with creative enterprises producing virtual goods and services.
Your avatar is a visual representation of you and your professional reputation. It is your professional brand online. This slide set is from my workshop I taught at the National Defense University in 2012. You can equate your avatar / your logo / your brand to efficiently build credibility. It includes the color meaning and communications parts of my book ""action-packed superheroes"" which came out of my MFA-VA research.

As part of a National Science Foundation grant, I was hired to produce these lessons and teach for Arizona State University for a pilot program to science educators to collaborate in virtual worlds. It was a super cool project to work on and I was delighted they included me! Lab coats for everyone! These intro slideshows are from 2011, things look a little different now, but the basics are the same.
