Spotlight : I'm not Playing with You: Real Bodies in Virtual Worlds

VWBPE 2023 Spotlight
Presented On: March 25, 2023
Speakers: Deanya Schempp / Deanya Zenfold and Ivory Imari
Categories: Ethics & Responsibility

“Virtual Worlds create safe spaces where anyone can be anyone, escaping their realities, or re-envisioning them, depending only on their own self-made choices.” Or so I thought, 10 years ago. Today, I call, “BS.” Many people do not feel free or "safe" in bodies that don't look like theirs. And when their rhetorical choices of body parts are challenged or questioned, it can reify the racism, able-ism, and strong gender codes that they experience outside of Virtual Worlds.

Participants will be able to:

 * recognize their own biases toward individual avatar components.
 * recognize how their own biases impact their teaching methods.
